Basirhat is a city as well as a municipality in the North of 24 Parganas district in the State of West Bengal. On the banks of River Ichhamati the city is connected to border of Bangladesh with well road and rail facility to Barasat. Administration in Basirhat

The sub-division of Basirhat was formed in the year 1861, as per the Government order. This town constitutes Police stations like the Kalinga, Harua and Husenabad. Earlier, Basirhat was under the jurisdiction of the city of Barasat Sub-division that was renamed as the Basurhat till the year 1896. While, Basirhat municipality was situated during 1st of April 1869, which was separated into 22 wards that covers an area of 22.5 km².

Basirhat Municipality

Basirhat Municipality covers about 22.01 sq kms. As per 1981 India Census, the total population was found to be 81,040; though there were just 10 wards till the year 1964, under the Basirhat Municipality. However, during the year 1995, the number of wards started to increase up to 18. Further, after 1995, as per the population basis, Basirhat Municipality got re-established with 22 wards, and the total area of the current Municipality was approximately 8.5 square miles.Basirhat is not just a city, but also a municipality in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The city has been established on the river-side on the sub-divisional town. While in the Basirhat Municipal area, where you can find 74 percent of tube-wells, which are owned by the Municipality and the rest of the 26 percent are personally owned tube wells. There were actually two service reservoirs, as well as 3 pump houses that were supposed to be built by the PHE in the area of Municipality.

History of Basirhat

Basirhat is known for 'Tebhaga Movement' of 1946-47. The peasant movement further boosted the ongoing movements for the independence of India. This beautiful place was developed initially by the families of two people namely the Jhine's Ghosh and another person was Mir's of Mirbati. The history behind the popularity of the town is long, but two reasons are birth of Dinesh Chandra Majumder (a freedom fighter), and Swami Brahmananda (First President of Ramakrishna Mission). Both these legends have been born in the same city, because of which the town has become so popular.

Geography of Basirhat

Basirhat lies at a latitude of 22.66° N and longitude of 88.89° E, with an average altitude of 6 meters (i.e, approximately 19 feet long). The town is near to the River Icchamati, which is surrounded by the mountains, which gives a great scenic beauty of the city of Basirhat. Ichamati River is a trans-boundary river that flows via India and Bangladesh, and thereby forms the boundary between the two countries. While the river is faces the siltation problem and further leads to thin water flow in the dry season as well as floods in the rainy season.

As per 2011 Census of India, Basirhat Urban area had a total population of 144,891; amongst which, 73,491 constitute males, and total population of females were 71,400. While, the total population of children between the age of 0–6 years was 12,578. The average literacy rate for the total population of 7+ age was 86.88 per cent. And the main language spoken at this town is Bengali.

The major business or trading in Basirhat are the rice, legumes, dates and mustard, jute and potatoes. These are grown in large numbers and sold in this town of Basirhat. Apart from agriculture, other businesses like brick making and Nolen Sandesh, as well as the Gamcha and fishereies, along with sugar milling business activities are performed here. However, agriculture is the main business undertaken by the people of Basirhat, and economy depends upon the trading done here.

Transportation in Basirhat

Basirhat was actually very well-connected with the Barasat through the narrow gauge Barasat. But, Basirhat Railway was supposed to be operated by the Martin's Light Railways, which was unfortunately closed during 1955 and further got converted into broad gauge. While, the railway tracks in this region were electrified and EMU services were offered via Sealdah and Hasnabad. These were provided by the Kolkata Suburban Railway. Also, there are convenient bus services to reach Kolkata as well as some other places from the city of Basirhat.
